We never use:

  • These artificial preservatives have been used to increase beauty products’ shelf life for just over a century. Which is a worry, because studies have shown they can cause skin irritation, disrupt hormones, and put you at higher risk of cancer and infertility.

  • SLS (or sodium lauryl sulfate) is a chemical agent that helps give soaps and cleaners their foamy texture. It’s also a known irritant, so you won’t find it anywhere near Poète.

  • Used to make plastic more durable, phthalates are found in everything from garden hoses to hair products. They’re endocrine disruptors, which means they can affect the body’s hormone and reproductive systems. Not only that, they’re also easily released into the environment – where they can have a toxic effect.

  • Phosphates are great for controlling the PH level in beauty products, but they’re not so great for the environment. When these inorganic compounds make their way down the drain and into oceans and lakes, they can wreak havoc on the water’s delicate ecosystem.

  • Carcinogens are substances that can cause cancer. Scientists have identified hundreds of known carcinogens – many of which can be found in products on bathroom shelves the world over.

  • Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with the hormonal system – increasing the risk of cancer, birth defects, and fertility issues. There are a number of confirmed and suspected endocrine disruptors out there, used in everything from pesticides, to clothing, to skincare.

  • We believe in soft and delicate scents that treat you and your skin gently. We avoid harsh and overpowering fragrances, just like we avoid harsh and harmful chemicals.

  • The way we see it, animal testing should be a thing of the past. We’ve never tested any of our products on our furry or feathered friends, and we guarantee we never will.

The wax we use, soft and smooth to the touch, is based on renewable vegetable sources and is non-toxic, paraffin-free, colorant-free, and biodegradable. The cotton wicks are paraffin-free and not chemically treated, specifically selected for their high performance fibers that enable consistent capillary action while ensuring a wick trimming flame posture. Our fragrances comply with the standards set by the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), as well as the stricter policies we set for ourselves — see "Ingredients" and "Why Poète Candles?" below.

Not ours, Poète candles are hand-poured with responsibly sourced soy wax. Soy wax is more expensive and harder to pour evenly, but we take the pain and extra effort because it burns cleaner, non-toxic and lasts up to 30% longer, so you can enjoy your favorite candle with peace of mind.
